MacBook Air M5 vs M4 — Is the Upgrade Worth It in Sri Lanka?

MacBook Air M5 vs M4 — Is the Upgrade Worth It?

If you already own an M4 MacBook Air, or you're deciding between the two generations while shopping in Sri Lanka, this guide breaks down what actually changes — and whether it's worth paying the difference.

Performance

Each new Apple Silicon generation brings improvements in CPU speed, GPU performance, and power efficiency. The M5 chip generally offers faster multi-core performance for demanding tasks, improved GPU performance, and better performance-per-watt.

For everyday tasks — browsing, documents, streaming, email — both the M4 and M5 MacBook Air feel equally fast. The difference shows up mainly in heavier, sustained workloads.

Who Should Upgrade

Upgrade to the M5 if you:

• Do video editing, 3D rendering, or heavy multitasking regularly
• Plan to keep the laptop for 4–5+ years and want the extra headroom
• Are buying your first MacBook and there's little price difference between M4 and M5 stock

Stick with the M4 if you:

• Mainly use your laptop for browsing, documents, and streaming
• Want to save money — M4 models are often discounted once M5 launches
• Don't run performance-intensive software

Battery Life

Both chips are known for excellent battery life, easily lasting a full workday for typical use. The M5 generation typically edges out the M4 in efficiency, but the real-world difference for most users is modest.

Our Recommendation

For most everyday users in Sri Lanka — students, professionals doing office work, casual creators — the M4 MacBook Air remains an excellent, more affordable choice. The M5 is worth the extra cost primarily for creative professionals, developers, or anyone who wants the newest chip for long-term future-proofing.
